Sandwich is Cape Cod’s oldest town (founded in 1637) and the Dunbar House is right in the heart of the old village. Across the street is The Dexter Grist Mill (restored mill dating from 1640's) where you can see Leo the Miller grinding his corn. Next door is The Thornton Burgess Museum, devoted to the famous children’s author and his conservationalist message. Just up the street is The Hoxie House, one of the oldest houses on Cape Cod (1675) and furnished with period pieces. Across the square is The Sandwich Glass Museum and its world class collection of exhibits. Round the corner is Yesteryear’s Doll Museum with an extensive collection of rare and antique dolls. Sandwich also has a number of interesting shops, ranging from a weather store to antique emporia.

...up Grove Street (on the other side of the pond) past some grand old colonials and the old town burial ground (some grave stones date from the 17th cent.) to The Heritage Plantation (1 mile). Here lies 76 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, an antique car museums, a military museum and a working carousel. The famous rhododendrons blossom in May & June.
An evening visit to The Boardwalk is a must (1 mile), it takes you across the salt marshes to the beach. The structure was entirely rebuilt after a particularly furious Nor’Easter in 1991 destroyed the old boardwalk. All the townsfolk paid for a plank, including The Dunbar House. A little further west brings you to the Sandwich marina. An interesting assortment of boats, ranging from yachts to fishing boats, lay moored there at the entrance to the Cape Cod Canal and its 17 mile cycle path.
Sandwich has a fine selection of quality restaurants, serving some of the country’s best seafood, within a few minutes walk of the house.
Within an easy drive are the other fantastic sights of Cape Cod: The ocean and the National Seashore, world famous beaches and dunes are all over the Cape. The colonial and seafaring heritage is evident in every village, drive down Rt. 6a, The Old Kings Highway (it begins in Sandwich) winding for miles through historic villages, salt marshes and cranberry bogs. Cape Cod is one of the top five places in the world for whale watching, the closest boat is 15 minutes away. Ferries to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard are 20 minutes away. Boston (& Logan International Airport) is 1 hour by car, Plymouth and the Mayflower is 25 mins away, the mansions of Newport Rhode Island are 1hr 20 mins drive and New York City is an easy four hour drive. In short, The Dunbar House and Sandwich make the perfect base for a short break or an extended stay.
